HOME & COMMUNITY AED QUESTIONS

Common questions about choosing an AED.

Do I need an AED at home or in my community?

Not every home or community facility will need an AED, but it may be worth considering if someone is at increased risk of sudden cardiac arrest, emergency response times could be longer, or the location is regularly used by a large number of people.

Jordan can talk through your circumstances and help you decide whether an AED is appropriate, without pushing you into equipment you don’t need.

What AED is suitable for my home or community?

Look for a TGA-approved AED that is reliable, straightforward to operate and supported by readily available replacement pads and batteries. The right model also depends on where it will be stored, who may need to use it and whether it will travel with you. Jordan can help match the equipment to your situation.

Where should an AED be located?

An AED should be easy to see, clearly signed and quickly accessible in an emergency. In a community facility, this is generally a central area that regular users can reach without needing a key. Temperature, weather exposure and security should also be considered when choosing the location.

Does an AED require ongoing maintenance?

Yes. Different models dicate difference mainenance requirements in their manuals. Typically, the AED’s status indicator should be checked regularly, while electrode pads and batteries also need to be checked and replaced before they expire. The unit should also be inspected after use or if it has been damaged or moved. Always follow the manufacturer’s maintenance requirements for your device.

Do I need a cabinet and signage?

Possibly. Not every home needs a cabinet, but cabinets are strongly worth considering in shared or publicly accessible spaces, particularly alarmed cabinets for obvious reasons. They protect the AED, make it easier to identify and help keep everything together. Clear signage also helps people locate the AED quickly during an emergency.
